The road that flowed through Chennai’s history

Mount Road or Anna Salai connects Fort St. George to St. Thomas Mount. Let us look at what is on this historic thoroughfare in the stretch to the South, after Gemini Circle.
Dominated by the flyover, this intersection of Mount, Cathedral and Nungambakkam High Roads is historic. On the right, as you face South, stood Gemini Studios. In the early 1800s it was one of the many residences of Edward, Second Lord Clive. Later it was the residence of Sir Francis J.E. Spring, the man who built the Madras Port in the 1900s. Sometime in the 1930s, it became the offices of pioneering filmmaker and producer K. Subrahmanyam. Later, S.S. Vasan acquired it, renaming it Gemini Studios. Several great hits were made in this location. Following Vasan’s death in the 1960s, Gemini was closed and the property changed hands, becoming a warren of multi-storeyed buildings. But the name Gemini still lingers at this intersection.
Opposite Gemini, on Cathedral Road, stand the Agri-Horticultural Society Gardens. The Society was founded in 1835 and in addition to its own gardens, took on lease a vast property adjoining Mount Road. This became famous for its Woodlands Drive-In Restaurant which came up here in the 1960s. The hotel was closed a few years ago and the land reclaimed by the Government. Now it is the Semmozhi Poonga, a verdant preserve of green, open to the public.
Mount Road then enters what was once the village of Vanniya Teynampet. Here on the right, you have the Congress Grounds. A vast garden property known as Blackers Gardens, it was acquired and donated to the Congress Party by patriots and today serves as exhibition space. At its edge is Kamaraj Memorial Hall, a magnificent auditorium. Opposite Congress Grounds and hidden completely by other buildings stands the ruin of Minor Bungalow. Once this was the Newington College, a kind of finishing schools for princelings of South India. In 1919, de la Haye, the Principal, was shot dead by students who were suspected to be in love with his wife. The ensuing trial shook the city and the college was closed. Today the building looks ideal for a horror film. A little further down, on the same side as Minor Bungalow is the Hyatt Hotel, once a bungalow known as Abbotsbury. In its time it became a marriage hall, and later changed hands repeatedly. Always dogged by some misfortune or the other, it was acquired in the 1990s for a 5 star hotel, which never materialised, following the killing of the owner. It took another decade before the Hyatt made it a reality. Just before the Hyatt is Rostrevor Garden, a vast green setting for some grand old railway bungalows.
Further down Mount Road, you have the busy SIET intersection, so named as the South Indian Educational Trust, runs its college for women there. The Trust was the brainchild of Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed and began the college in 1955. Opposite this intersection is the residential cum business district of T Nagar. Further down, you cross Nandanam, a residential locality begun in the 1950s and named so by Rajaji. At the corner is the large open space that till recently housed the Poultry Research Station of the Tamil Nadu Animal and Veterinary Sciences University. The Research Station was begun in 1941 and made famous the Nandanam Broiler. It has now moved, with the land being made over to the Metro. Also in Nandanam is the expanse of the YMCA. Acquired in 1928, it developed into a facility for physical training, which it continues to be, thanks to Harry Crowe Buck, an American who made Madras his home in the 1920s. Next to it are the golf links of the Cosmopolitan Club. Laid out in 1930s, it marked the beginning of Indian interest in the game.
Historic Saidabad or Saiyad Khan’s Pettai or Saidapet, comes next. Gifted by the Nawab of Arcot in the 1730s, it was an independent village with a powerful Muslim presence. It has a historic mosque in its midst and also several old temples and churches. Till it became a part of Madras, Saidapet was the headquarters of the Chingleput District. The river Adyar cuts Mount Road here and over it is the historic Maramlong Bridge, first built by the Armenian Coja Petrus Uscan in 1728. Today, much expanded, it is called the Marai Malai Adigal Bridge. At the Guindy end of it stood Panagal Maligai, the Chingleput District Collector’s Office, a grand old edifice. It was later demolished to make way for the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board building. Still standing however is the old building of the Teacher’s College, Saidapet, founded in 1856. Its campus is now home to several other institutions.
As Mount Road passes over the bridge and enters Guindy, it separates two historic institutions. On the left is the Race Course, officially the Madras Race Club, which goes back to 1896. On the right is the King Institute of Preventive Medicine established in 1899 and still doing research into vaccines. Just before these is another historic area – the Guindy Industrial Estate, the first of its kind in the country, founded in 1956 by R. Venkataraman, then Industries Minister, Government of Madras.
Little Mount stands on one side of Guindy. Associated with St. Thomas, it had a Portugese Church on its summit from the 1550s. Now that shrine has been expanded considerably and modernised. Much larger than Little Mount is St. Thomas Mount, also associated with the apostle of Jesus and having a church constructed originally in the 1550s. It is believed to be spot where St. Thomas was martyred. Steps leading to the summit were first laid out by Coja Petrus Uscan. Mount Road as a name ends at St. Thomas Mount, close to the airport though it continues as the Grand Southern Trunk Road.

At this long-run Chennai eatery, the service is in shorts - "Trouser Kadai"

Sixty-nine-year-old cook R. Rajendran has run the small eatery from his house on R.K. Mutt Road since 1977.
For many the words ‘trouser kadai’ would conjure up the image of a garment showroom. But most people in Mandaveli, especially from Ramakrishna Mutt Road, know it as a 36-year-old eatery.
Sixty-nine-year-old cook R. Rajendran has run the small eatery, originally christened Arunagiri Vilas, from his house on R.K. Mutt Road since 1977.
“The name stuck as I cooked and served in the hotel in my trousers (shorts) right from the time I opened my business here,” laughs the elderly man seated on one of the old benches in his eatery and clad in dark green shorts.
Business is always hectic during mealtimes at Rajendran’s eatery but The Hinducaught up with him during a respite late in the afternoon.
The story behind the setting-up of the eatery starts on a sad note. “My ten-year-old daughter, Yamuna was suffering from psychiatric illness. My family members and I relocated to Madras from Tiruchi for her treatment. I rented this place and set up the eatery to meet her medical expenses and for easy access to her doctor,” Rajendran reminisced.
Yamuna passed away in 1979 but Rajendran, his wife and three sons stayed on in the city.
Rajendran serves over 80 meals daily at his eatery which opens for breakfast at 7.30 a.m. and downs shutters at 12.30 a.m. after dinner.
“I have been dining here for over 30 years now and the fare has always tasted like home food. Rajendran endeared himself to his customers, and therefore people started referring to him as ‘trouser mama’. Soon the hotel started to be referred as trouser kadai,” said Mohammed Ali of Pillaikovil Thottam, Mandaveli.
The cook claims, he and his three staff members grind the masalas instead of using packaged products. The cooking is done using only firewood.
The eatery doesn’t sport a signboard but only a banner declaring ‘meals ready.’ Perhaps it doesn’t need one after all.

Ranganathan Street, T.Nagar, Chennai

Ranganathan Street is a major commercial street in the neighborhood of T. Nagar, located in Chennai. The street houses several commercial establishments, primarily those involved in the clothing and jewelry industry. It has often been referred to as the most crowded street in Chennai

What is presently known as Ranganathan Street ought to have been Rangaswamy Iyengar Street after the first resident of that street. It was the usual practice then to name streets after the first resident irrespective of their class, caste or contribution.
Tupil Rangaswamy Iyengar, a retired Civil Servant of the erstwhile Madras Presidency, built his house in early 1920s. When civil authorities approached him for his formal approval the gentleman requested it be named after Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam.

Thiruvaluvar Temple in Mylapore

It is relatively unknown to many that there exists a temple for the saint composer Tiruvalluvar, at the heart of the Chennai city in Mylapore, where he was born and lived. Some call it a memorial while others consider it as a temple for Tiruvalluvar, who had immortalized his work in 1330 couplets, which was translated in all well known languages, inland and abroad by eminent scholars.

Location: The temple is situated at about 200 meters East of the statue of Tiruvalluvar on the Royapettah High road near Sri. Hanuman temple. The access to this temple is through narrow roads after crossing the Buckingham canal bridge towards Nattu Subburaya Mudali Street. Then the road branches off to North, leading to an arch way into the temple.

Although the basic temple was in existence since the15th century, some how, it was unknown to many, who even lived in the near by locations. The present temple was completed and consecrated in 1977. An entrance arch on the road welcomes the visitors, to an ample parking place for two wheelers before entering into another arch leading to the temple.

There is a big idol for Tiruvlluvar at the sanctum sanctorum before the Maha Manapam and for his wife, Vasugi Ammiyar on to his left, both facing the East. Also, are the shrines for the deities Arulmigu Ekambaranathar and Arulmigu Kamatchi Amman, a little farther away and for the Navagrahams at the front end, all with in the same compound.

Just by the side of the Maha Mandapam or the Meditation hall, is a stub of the trunk of a illuppai tree claded with copper plates and with a sign board displaying the message, ‘Tiruvalluvar was born here’. There is a larger than life marble statue of Tiruvalluvar in sitting posture and also of his parents Sri Adi and Sri Bhagavan, with Sri Adi holding him as a child in her arms and kneeling before her husband.

Tiruvalluvar and his wife lived happily for years enjoying a harmonious life, setting an example to the householders to emulate them. There is an interesting story on this:

One day, while Vasugi Ammiyar was drawing water in the well, Valluvar called her to attend to some work that needed her presence. Vasugi Ammiyar, a devoted wife, without any further thought, left immediately leaving the rope she was pulling from the well. When she returned after attending her work, the pail of water was still hanging in the mid air, as a proof of her devotion to her husband,

That famous well is still there in the temple, but there is no water now and is closed with sand. It is also covered with a steel grill for safety reasons.

When death separated his wife, Vasugi Ammiyar from Tiruvalluvar, the saint, laments like all other commoners, unable to bear the grief of her separation. The poet, noted for his unique style of the couplets in Tamil, changes to quatrain, which he did only once, and dedicates this verse, to his bereaved wife.

அடியிற்கினியாளே அன்புடையாளே
படிசொல் தவறாத பாவாய்- அடிவருடி
பின்தூங்கி முனெழும் பேதாய் இனிதா ய்
என் தூங்கும் என் கண் இரவு
The quatrain roughly means: My sweetheart, dear lady, You never failed in (your) words, gently pressed my feet,Slept late, got up early (my) innocent, sweet one, How can my eyes sleep at nights?

Whatever you may call it, whether a temple or a memorial for Tiruvalluvar, it is a place to be visited not only by the Tamil speaking good world, but also by one and all to pay respects to the great saint and for his work, Tirukural, which is beyond all boundaries of cast, religion, community and stands as a timeless testimony that preaches the values and principles of good life.

Church of Our Lady of Light, Chennai (LUZ CHURCH)

The historical background of this church is intertwined with the traditional history of Christianity in India. Arrival of Christianity to India is of two phases, where by traditional accounts, St. Thomas brought the religion in the first century and attained martyrdom in Chennai in 53 AD. The second phase is after the arrival of Portuguese in the 15th century. The legends of the Church of Our Lady of Light connects both.

The history of the Church is compounded with the history of the arrival of the Portuguese to India. Soon after Vasco da Gama discovered the sea-route to India, the legend states, that eight Jesuit priests left for India from Lisbon with the fleet of Pedro Alvares Cabral on the 9 March 1500 A.D. (If this is the story it is definitely a legend... The Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) was founded in 1540. It was therefore impossible for Jesuits to reach India in 1500.) They landed in Calicut, where three of the Friars were slain on the 16 November 1500. The others reached Cochin, and settled down of preach the good news. A few years later, they sailed down South to spread their message further. It is said, that the Friars were lost in the rough sea and started praying to Mother Mary for their safety. The legend states that they were miraculously guided by a mysterious bright light which guided them safe to land. The Friars that in honour of their safe arrival to the land, built the Church of Our Lady of Light (Portuguese: Nossa Senhora da Luz). Although some legends claim that it was common Portuguese sailors who were rescued and not missionaries. The church would later suffer damages inflicted from the fources of Golconda between 1662 and 1673. During the times of Haider Ali's invasion of the city forts between 1780 and 1782, the British East India Company Forces occupied the Luz Parish Residence for some years. Currently this church also governs the Stella Maris College, Chennai. It is located about 1.5 km from the Santhome Basilica where Apostle of Jesus Saint Thomas is believed to be buried. Although now a bustling locale, it is believed that this area could have been covered with mangroves in the early days. The road leading to the church is now named as Luz Church road after the church itself.

Chennai: Visa seekers throng US Consulate

Chennai: If you thought that the scene near the US Consulate in Chennai resembled that of a Vishnu temple in the month of Purattasi, you could scarcely be faulted for the misconception. With the interviews for visas to the USA restarting after a week of protests, applicants decided to leave little to chance as the crowd starting to build, from as early as 5.30 am. The strong contingent of police personnel posted for security were, in fact, taken by surprise at such an early start, as the scheduled rounds of interviews were set to begin only at 8.30 am.
While Chennaites using the Anna Flyover are accustomed to watching crisply-attired men and women waiting in long queues outside the Consulate in the morning, police officers said the route for applicants into the Consulate was slightly tweaked for security reasons. Additional levels of checking were put up at the Avvai Shanmugam Salai end, where police officers scrupulously checked ID cards before letting people pass.
In fact, in one case, the security regulations were so tight that a man, who took his car keys inside, was stopped from entering the consulate and was asked to repeat the check from the begining. There were no separate counters for the elderly, who were seen questioning the police on the rationale behind such a set up. However, the minute planning paid off as the officers were able to make sure that the queue didn’t stagnate at any point and the crowd kept moving every minute.
Sources from the Consulate said most of those who assembled for the interviews on Monday were slotted in their original schedule, before the riots happened. This meant that very few who missed the interviews last week turned up. However, applicants had no kind words for the protesters, as the delay had left them worried and stressed. This apart, they were also a little miffed with the procedures put in place for rescheduling, as they felt it was cumbersome on many counts.
Vineetha (name changed), who was supposed to attend the interviews last Thursday, had to reschedule her appointments owing to the closure. However, she said that until Friday evening, the process did not go through. “No one answered the VFS helpline. There was little clarity on what we needed to do. I was supposed to report to my college for the internship on October 15. It was certainly a very anxious time,” she recalled.
Bhargavi from Coimbatore, another applicant, said, “Their website said that we could reschedule the appointments as per our convenience subject to availability of dates. Once the process began, it was smooth,” she said, pointing out that she had to reach the US by October 10. “They said if it was very urgent, we could go to another centre. But there is a view that chances of rejection are higher when you move to another centre,” she pointed out.
Looking back at the protests, applicants regarded it ‘unnecessary’. “Somebody somewhere has made a movie that is not even worth watching. What they have done through these protests is give them free publicity,” said a woman who had come from Bangalore for the interview on Monday. “It is a blessing that they process the applications in Chennai. What if they decide to move the processing some where else due to these protests? We would be forced to travel long distances,” pointed out an octogenarian.
However, many were unwilling to comment on the agitations, stating that it involved “matters of religious faith.” Things moved smoothly and wound to a close under the strict vigil of the security guards employed by the consulate as well as the plethora of policemen who were ready with riot control gear. The extra security will remain in place for a while longer.

Tamil Nadu to get more coin-vending machines

65 machines, set up by eight banks, installed at various branches in Chennai

Be it at markets, bus and railways stations, or other busy public places in the city, coin-vending machines (CVMs) are set to make life easier for traders and the public.
Following a push from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), public sector lenders along with private and foreign banks are gearing up to install CVMs in their branches and in public places for exchange of currency notes with coins.
A total of 65 CVMs were inaugurated at various bank branches across Chennai recently.
These CVMs were installed by eight banks — Indian Overseas Bank (24), Indian Bank (15), State Bank of India (10), Canara Bank (5), Bank of India (5), Axis Bank (4), Standard Chartered Bank (1) and TNSC bank (1).
The banks will soon install CVMs in other parts of the State and the Union Territory of Puducherry, and the initiative is expected to help address the problem of coin shortage.
Already, there are 120 CVMs installed by various banks across the State. “Another 85 CVMs are to be installed in Tamil Nadu (excluding Chennai) and Puducherry in the coming months. With the CVM initiative, exchange of currency notes for coins will be available at the doorstep, to the public. It will help both people and banks save time,” said J. Sadakkadulla, regional director, RBI.
The machines will scan the inserted note, verify its genuineness and dispense coins of an equal value. The coins will be available in denominations of Re. 1, Rs. 2 Rs. 5 and Rs. 10, of which any two or three denominations will be dispensed.
Banks are being incentivised for installing CVMs in branches and important places. “We have to ensure 100 per cent uptime of CVMs to make this initiative successful,” said M. Narendra, chairman and managing director, Indian Overseas Bank.
